I met a ballerina who was actually born in Pisa.

It was obvious to me that she needed to be leaning at the precise angle of the renowned Leaning Tower of Pisa, 3.99 degrees.

I travelled to Pisa several times to double-check the angle and the sculpture was completed in Florence, Italy.

The base is made of white marble from the nearby seaside town, Carrara.

Behind every sculpture is a story . . .

Sculpted from life—Sven-Ole Thorsen, Danish strongman turned movie star from ‘Conan the Barbarian’ and ‘Gladiator’.

The year was 1989 and I was pumping iron at Gold’s gym in Venice, California where among the usual guys working out were Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Incredible Hulk, Lou Ferrigno.

At the time a “cigar craze” had hit the nation and I had the idea to find someone with “the hand of a god” to model for a bronze sculpture of a cigar in hand.

Sven agreed to model if he could smoke a cigar while he was posing, but the posing time was limited to when the cigar was finished.

I was under a lot of pressure because the sculpture was twice life-size and the human hand is a famously challenging thing to sculpt. Over time, I also became quite nervous because Sven kept telling me ‘funny’ stories about bad things he did to people he didn’t get along with. I remind you that Sven was an easy 320 lbs of muscle at a time when bodybuilders were pretty much all-natural.

One day, when I arrived to work on the sculpture, Sven surprised me by offering something to eat. Knowing the limited time I said, “Oh thank you! But that’s okay. I can get right to work.”

Sven insisted, saying in a slow, monotone voice, “This is your last meal”.

“Oh.” I said.

And the sculpture was finished that day.
