Behind every painting is a story . . .

I was sketching backstage at the Mariinsky Theatre in 2003. A performance on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of Peter the Great’s founding of Saint Petersburg:

The orchestra was winding down near the end of an Act. A corp de ballet dancer came off stage with a loud scream. She was crying and in great distress. In the darkness, she was greeted by several dancers who rushed to hold her.

My first impression was that her leg was broken.

I was astonished, as I never saw or heard of such a thing before. Next day I found out that her leg was fine. But rather, a guest conductor had speeded up the tempo and she couldn’t keep up. She knew she had fallen short. Something some dancers live with in the deep interior of the mind: Fear of falling.
