In 2009, I was invited by the Director of the National Opera and Ballet in Kyiv, to work with ballet artists and create a new series of paintings. Two dancers, who were close friends, were posing together, and as a reflection of their friendship, I asked them, “to embrace”. A hug is a simple gesture which I never imagined could take on a greater meaning. Sometimes in art, like Mona Lisa’s smile, the simplest gestures can be the most powerful.

The bronze portrait of Ted Arison was sculpted from life in New York City by YoungArts awardee and Presidential Scholar Kevin Berlin in 1994.

Commissioned by Lin Arison, that same year it was unveiled during a special performance by the New World Symphony, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. The occasion was Ted’s Birthday celebration in Miami, Florida.
