Cigar In Hand with model Cigar In Hand, bronze, 12 x 8 x 4in., 1994.

This sculpture was created just before the cigar craze of the mid 1990's. While still in Los Angeles Berlin went to World Gym in Venice looking for someone who had the hand of God--right out of a Michaelangelo painting--to pose for a "cigar in hand" sculpture. He found Sven Ole Thorsen, a 6'5", 320 lbs. actor from Denmark. Thorsen had smoked cigars for 14 years and knew how to hold a cigar. Two weeks after moving to NYC, upon a friend's suggestion, Berlin walked into Nat Sherman, the world famous, old time, tobacconist shop on 5th Avenue. One week later the Sherman's commissioned a limited edition of 30 sculptures, re-sculpted to feature the Nat Sherman label. The edition was showcased in their catalogue.
