Ted Arison, bronze, 30 x 141/2 x 14 in., 1994.
Ted Arison is the founder of Carnival Cruise Lines and the National Foundation for
Advancement in the Arts. This sculpture was unveiled on stage in Miami during a special performance by The New World Symphony. The following is from my speech that
evening:
To me Ted Arison is larger than life, which is why I chose to make the
sculpture one and one half times life-size. Because Ted Arison
has touched so many people's lives, it seemed obvious that I needed to create
an object large enough to allow people to touch him back. It is not intended
as a fragile object to be locked away in a glass case, but rather as a strong,
active reminder of the kind of spirit that it took to found NFAA.
