Opening on September 8, 2013 at 16:00 in the presence of the artist. Livingstone Gallery presents in September paintings and works on paper by Kevin Berlin (New York, 1965). This is the first solo exhibition of the American artist in the Netherlands.
As an artist Kevin Berlin provides access to particular communities that normally remain sealed. He has explored the world of ballet dancers from St. Petersburg, Russia and became involved with the National Circus of Ukraine. The tensions and emotions he observes behind the scenes are made visible in his paintings.
At the circus he got the chance to be very close with lion tamers and their hidden world. He literally entered "into the cage." From this experience emerged an extensive series of paintings entitled "Tiger Training For Beginners." With works like "into the cage," he refers to the moment when the animal trainer enters the cage and comes face to face with the man devouring beasts.
Themes such as vulnerability, fear, lust and our hidden feelings and desires are portrayed by Kevin Berlin in a special way and in his palette of gray and black with touches of vivid color. Matters of great importance are reduced to their essence. We are confronted with our hidden emotions. Like the animal trainer we too are trying to survive in today's society.

Livingstone gallery presenteert in september schilderijen en werk op papier van Kevin Berlin (New York, 1965). Dit is de eerste solotentoonstelling van deze Amerikaanse kunstenaar in Nederland.
Als kunstenaar weet Kevin Berlin zich toegang te verschaffen tot bijzondere gemeenschappen die normaal hermetisch gesloten blijven. Zo exploreerde hij de wereld van de balletdansers uit Sint Petersburg en draaide hij mee met het Nationale Circus van de Oekraine. De spanningen en emoties die hij observeert achter de schermen maakt hij zichtbaar in zijn schilderijen.
Bij het circus kreeg hij zelfs de kans om als assistent leeuwentemmer deze wereld van wel zeer dichtbij mee te maken en letterlijk in de kooi te stappen. Uit deze ervaringen ontstond een omvangrijke serie schilderijen 'Tiger training for beginners'. Met werken als 'Into the cage' verwijst hij naar het moment waarop de dompteur de kooi met wilde dieren betreedt en oog in oog komt te staan met de mensverslindende beesten.
Thema's als kwetsbaarheid, angst, lust en onze verborgen gevoelens en verlangens worden door Kevin Berlin op bijzondere wijze verbeeld en in zijn beperkte palet van hoofzakelijk grijs en zwart teruggebracht tot hun essentie. Hierdoor confronteert hij ons met onze verborgen emoties. Net als de dompteur proberen wij ons staande te houden in de hedendaagse maatschappij.
