The Colossal Sunflower, bronze, 121/2 x 6 x 6 feet, 1998.
This 3,000 pound botanical behemoth was unveiled in Southampton, NY on August
8, 1998. The commissioned bronze sculpture was 'planted' in the garden of
Henry Buhl, noted sunflower enthusiast, art collector and founder of the SoHo
Partnership. The Colossal Sunflower is currently being considered by the
Guiness Book of World Records. The head of the flower is 6 feet tall with a
12-foot stem and 89 petals weighing up to 22 lbs. each. The installation of
the flower required eight men and a 60-foot crane.
