The gallery door was shut and visitors were warned not to make any sudden movements and to stay quiet. The sounds of big cats snarling were heard from behind a wall that concealed Mr. Berlin...

When he appeared, he led out on a silver chain a beautiful woman painted as a tiger. After positioning her on a perch in the gallery’s front window, he disappeared and was led back by another beautiful woman painted as a lion. After coaxing the lion into submission, the artist led the two felines through a series of circus moves using hula hoops...

The performance was inspired by Mr. Berlin’s actual lessons with tiger trainers from the National Circus of Ukraine on taming real tigers and lions. Mr. Berlin had been in the neighborhood studying the lives of ballet dancers with the Ukraine National Opera, and some of the paintings that came out of that study are included in the current show at RVS Fine Art, “Kiev Days/Kiev Nights.” …

To prepare this year’s performance piece, Mr. Berlin relayed typical tiger and lion behaviors and attitudes to the two women who volunteered to assist him. His training moves were based on what he learned from professional trainers, he said...
