Donut Over City Hall, oil on canvas, 72 x 52 in., 1998.
The first thing I did was go straight to the New York District Attorney's
office where I performed an in-depth interview with one of the city's
assistant DAs to determine exactly what type of donuts are most likely to be
consumed in City Hall. Powdered jelly-filled donuts came in first, but the
chocolate glazed looked more aesthetically pleasing. Four trips to Penn
Station later, I finally found the perfect chocolate glazed donut. For
authenticity I brought the donut to the art supply store to pick out the most
appetizing shades of brown.
