Hot Dog in the Harbour, oil on canvas, 36 x 52 in., 1998.
The hot dog used in this painting was purchased from the hot dog stand across
the street from my studio in SoHo. It took three tries before the hot dog
vendor got the stripe of mustard just right for the painting. He couldn't
understand why I cared what the mustard looked like. He said most people eat their hot dogs. The painting didn't last fifteen minutes in the
window of RVS Fine Art Gallery in Southampton on July 4th, before Howard Lorber, owner of the Nathan's Famous empire, ordered it "to go."
